Sammendrag
The project aims at discussing a selection of Norwegian coroners’ diplomas
from the late middle ages, ca 1300 – 1550. As the diplomas present evidence
from witnesses in court in connection with murders, the diploma texts will be
discussed in relation to the law itself, as well as to the various
representatives of the law. The coroners’ diplomas are well suited to
throwing light on late medieval mentality, for instance central
mental aspects like shame and honour. A discussion of mentality will
therefore be included. Furthermore, parts of several coroners’
diplomas contain what may be called ”literary descriptions”. These
descriptions seem to be inspired by an oral saga tradition. The
characteristic literary language in the coroners’ diplomas will be
analysed closely in the project.
