Alcohol-related absenteeism

Sammendrag

Included in project are the following components. (A) A recently started PhD project funded by the Norwegian Research Council is looking to produce more reliable estimates of the relationship between alcohol consumption and sickness absence, and to describe the prevalence of alcohol-related sickness absence in Norway and in subgroups of the population. Social inequality and gender differences are central themes. The project will also examine the importance of different drinking patterns and propensity to engage in antisocial behaviour during adolescence for later sickness absenteeism among young adults. (B) Working in conjunction with the National Public Health Institute (FHI) SIRUS conducted a pilot study of workers in Norway to determine the prevalence of alcohol use (drugs and pharmaceuticals). Additional components were added to the project and there are plans to recruit the requisite number participants to enable an examination of consumption differences by gender and type of business/workplace, social inequalities in the use of intoxicants and attributable sick leave. Project leader: Hallvard Gjerde at FHI.
