Depression and Diabetes in Brazil

Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag

Diabetes and depression are common non-communicable diseases in today`s society. Comorbid depression in diabetes has been associated with increased mortality rates, higher health care costs, and decreased quality of life. The association between these two conditions has been found by several; however, the transcultural validity of these findings still needs to be demonstrated. In Brazil, there are few studies published about this topic, despite the increase in both conditions and the poorer health outcomes related to this comorbidity. The main purpose of this study is to assess the prevalence of depression and diabetes, and its association in northeastern Brazil. By providing such information, the study ultimately aims to optimize prevention and health promotion strategies, patients’ care and promote a more cost-effective allocation of resources.
