This project aims to build a culture of internationalisation at the core of the teacher training programmes
at USN and partner institutions. The main objective of the project is to ensure that more students
gain international experience during their education, by taking advantage of different ways of
internationalisation such as virtual mobility and internationalisation “at home”, as well as traditional
mobility.
The project will respond to the ongoing curriculum reform processes that have introduced three
crosscutting themes into Norwegian primary education: democracy & citizenship, sustainable
development and public health & life skills. As these are to be mainstreamed into all subject areas in
both schools and teacher education, it is important to strengthen staff and student capacity related
to these topics. To achieve this, the project will strengthen strategic partnerships for internationalised
teaching activities, as well as international research-based development projects. Project activities
include joint research with a focus on international and comparative education, joint teaching in virtual
classrooms, and activities to stimulate increased student mobility.
Internationalisation “at home” is an integrated approach to increase quality in teacher education. The
aim is to make sure that all students experience internationalisation at USN, even those electing not
to go abroad. Another key aspect of this strategy is to integrate incoming students in mainstreamed
international courses. Virtual mobility includes taking advantage of innovative technology and
pedagogical approaches to teach jointly with international colleagues in virtual classrooms. A key aim is
to lower the threshold for student participation in international learning environments.
