Validation of Conners’ Continuous Performance Test-version 3

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

The Conners’ Continuous Performance test is the most used computerized test in Norway and North America. It pertain to measure different aspects of attention enabling the clinician to give a nuanced description of mechanisms underlying inattention. We have done extensive research on the second version of the test ten years ago, contributing to the present third version. There is a need for validating the present version extensively in clinical settings. In the present study we will analyze already collected test data from about 1000 patients replicating and extending previous research. The patients are recruited from several clinics and are representative of those being assessed in Norway (ADHD, learning disorders, depression, drug abuse, brain injury). We are the only research group that so far have decomposed the test and constructed experimental measures that can improve the test’s ability to diagnose attention deficit and differentiate between types of inattention. This is important since diagnosis of ADHD among adults is presently controversial and diagnostic practices and prevalence rate differs between Norwegian hospitals. The experimental procedures in the present study will focus on new ways to measure performance variability, by computing a Coefficient of Variability and by analyzing ex-Gaussian distribution of reaction times. The study will improve the preciseness of the constructs measured through first exploratory, then confirmatory- factor analysis and finally by validating those constructs in correlation with other tests and in clinical groups. This research will potentially have great impact on how inattention is measured in Norway and internationally.

Metode

The project is based on anonymous data derived from internal quality registers in Vestfold Hospital Trust and the part time private practice of the project leader. The internal quality registers from Vestfold Hospital trust is based on patients from the Rehabilitation and Habilitation sections (“Klinikk Fysikalsk Medisin og Rehabilitering” and “Habiliteringstjenesten” altogether about 750 patients protocols. Data will be extracted directly from the computer program of the CCPT and from the computer program of BRIEF. Results from other neuropsychological tests of attention will be added manually into the data file as well as diagnosis.
