Tittel

The phenomenon of fitness to practice in nursing education: a protocol for an integrative review.

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

To ensure patient safety the nursing educations plays an important role in developing qualified candidates to promote and ensure patient safety in their role as student nurses and future nurses. Student nurses need to achieve learning outcomes and passing exams, also, their clinical competence and professional behaviours in all stages of their education is assessed. In a Norwegian context this is regulated in a legislative regulation, ‘Forskrift for skikkethet’. This terminology is best translated into ‘fitness to practice’ or ‘suitability’. However, for instance ‘fitness to practice’ is not an international concept. The terms vary internationally, but the phenomenon seems to be similar.

This integrative review will focus on literature and research on assessments done to identify student nurses in clinical placements who might or clearly poses a risk for safe practice and patient safety. The aim of this study is to capture and analyse how this phenomenon is described and assessed.

Review question

How are the nursing educations ensuring patient safety by identifying student nurses who poses a potential risk for patient safety?

How is this phenomenon described and assessed?
