Teacher in a globalized world. The long-term impact of international practicum on teachers's professional development

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

For most teachers working in Norwegian school, the process of globalization has led to new challenges as many classrooms have become diverse due to international migration. This is challenges connected to how to handle learners and families with diverse religious backgrounds, cultural practices, various perspectives on gender issues, a variety of languages, diversity in norms and values, etc.  This is not only a challenge for the Norwegian teachers. The last results from Teaching and Learning International Study (TALIS) including teachers across 48 countries (OECD 2019), indicates that these teachers express that they are not prepared for diversity in their position as a teacher. Teacher education should include intercultural competence and global awareness to prepare teachers for a diverse classroom.

Compared to the richness of studies on short term impact there are few studies on the long-term effects of international mobility (DeGraf, Slager, Larsen, & Ditta, 2013; Nunan, 2006). Those who have studied the long-term effects find lasting personal and professional effects of having taken part in international mobility of student teachers. On the personal level, they have found improved language skills, increased self-esteem, and greater interest in international affairs. On the professional level, studies have found an impact on curricular and instructional practices (Hadis, 2005; Wikan, 2020).

It is quite common for institutions to meet this challenge by offering exchange programmes.  Some offer also international practicum in the Global South as a part of their teacher education in North. Students' reflections about the North- South perspectives, traditions and cultures start before the student go abroad, but require a lifelong awareness of the global and local experiences from the Internship in South. (Deardorff and Arasaratnam-Smith, 2017) Intercultural competence must be intentionally addressed throughout the curriculum at home and through experiential learning of the internship abroad (Deardorff and Arasaratnam-Smith, 2017:150).

In this research proposal we intend to study the long-term impact of international practicum programmes. The objective is examining how the participants evaluate the value of international practicum for their work as teachers. We ask the informants how their experience is useful in their teaching, and if their experience can be applied when teaching in diverse classrooms. We also ask if they have experienced professional development as teachers through practice in another context.  Further on, we ask how they think their experience can be used generally in intercultural communication.

Metode

The research approach is phenomenological and qualitative.  The main data collection method is a questionnaire with open-ended answers. This is chosen of practical reasons.  The objects of study are former student teacher presently working as teachers.  By e-mailing them the questionnaire we might reach them more easily than booking a personal meeting.  The Covid19 situation is another reason why we chose this method. One drawback is that we might lose nuances because we do not have the option to follow up with questions.  On the other hand, a strength is that the data is the research objects own words.

The questionnaire address issues such professional growth, gaining a global perspective and intercultural competence. In the questionnaire we will ask the participants open ended questions and focus on professional, personal, intercultural, and global dimensions. The categorize is inspired by other empirical studies on the effect of international practicum.
