Tittel

Exploring the chemistry of the heaviest elements with SISAK

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

The principal objective is to discover and probe the chemical properties of the heaviest elements known, thetransactinides.. The transactinides can only be produced artificially, since their nucleuses are unstable and willdisintegrate shortly after they are produced. They are, though, a unique testing ground for our currentunderstanding and modelling of the elements as they lie at the extreme of the known part of the periodic table ofthe elements. Thus, our current models about the chemical properties of the elements can be tested to see if they breaks downfor extremely heavy elements. For example, there are predictions that the relativistic part of the wave functions willbecome so dominant that it will change the classically predicted chemical properties. This project aims atinvestigating the chemical properties of the transactinides in the liquid phase, using our on-line and continuousliquid-liquid separation system SISAK.
