KIDSCREEN- en studie av livskvalitet blant barn og ungdom

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

This study is a part of a larger project, the international KIDSCREEN study which was funded by the European Commission within the EC 5th Framework -programme: "Quality of life and Management of living Resources." The overall aim of this particularly survey is to provide further understanding and knowledge about Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) in Norwegian children and adolescents. Assessing HRQOL in children and adolescents is important and can give useful information about how groups perceive their quality of life, identify children who are at risk for health problems, and help in early identification of possible impairments in well-being. Norwegian children and adolescents appear to be among the healthiest in the world, but the prevalence of psychosocial problems have been reported to be high in this group. Previous studies have shown different factors affecting the HRQOL in children and adolescents. It has been well documented that pain has become a common health problem among children and adolescents. A review of the literature shows that the prevalence of pain in children and adolescents has increased during the last twenty years, and has become an important public health problem. The association between HRQoL and pain has been shown previously. During the last years, the prevalence of children and adolescents with overweight and obesity has increased, and there is been a growing awareness of the health consequences of this condition. Several studies have identified bmi and body image as a significant factor associated with poor HRQOL in children and adolescents. However, less focus has been on children and adolescents according to HRQoL in a non-clinical population. A further aim is therefore to study the relationship between health related factors like bmi, body-image and pain, and HRQOL in Norwegian Children and adolescents.1675 children and adolescents (age 8-18 years) and their parents were invited to participate in this study. Overall response rate children-74% (N=1238), parents 67% (N=835).

Metode

Cross sectional survey. A cluster sample of 1238 children and adolescents from 20 randomly selected schools in a region of Norway (helse-øst). Stratification according to geography (rural vs urban districts) and age into six grades (3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th in elementary schools, and 1th and 3rd in secondary schools). In addition the parents answered questionnaires about their childrens HRQoL and pain. Informed consent from the children and their parents were needed.
