Introduction: Up to now, approximately 60 Learning and Mastery Centers (LMS) are established in Norway. Despite the considerable number of centers with an extensive activity, little research is conducted regarding the results of different educational and mastery courses. Activities vary according to subjects matter, learning methods, length of courses, target group, and how participants are recruited. All these factors represent challenges in researching the utility value of the educational courses. The aim of this study is to examine the suitability of selected questionnaires in assessing changes in learning and mastery processes, as well as changes in health related quality of life in participants with chronic diseases. Design and methods: Longitudinal cohort study, with assessments before and after courses. In addition, assessments after 3, 6, and 12 months after the course; self reports. Qualitative interviews are also conducted with selected participants. The sample comprises two groups, 75 participants from each group, with pathological obesity, and persons with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Data analyses: Descriptive statistics, t-tests and correlation analyses, ANOVA and ANCOVA.Schedule: A. From autumn 2009 to autumn 2009: Baseline data collection. Preliminary analyses of data from baseline and end of course. B. Autumn 2009 to autumn 2010. Collection of follow up data. Performing analyses and writing articles. C. Spring 2010 Writing articles, as well as proposals for the main study. Autumn 2011: Publication of articles. The study is funded by the National Competence Center for Learning and Mastery of Chronic Diseases (Nasjonalt kompetansesenter for læring og mestring ved kronisk sykdom), OUS, HiO, and HiBu
