Tittel

The Seeds of Adaptation in the face of climate change. Assessing gene flow in maize at the local and global scale.

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

This is an interdisciplinary study of the genetic basis for adaptation to climate change in one of Africa’s major food crops, maize. The empirical core of the research will be a case study of the dynamics of gene flow in local seed systems in Southern Sudan. This project will investigate diversity, population structure, migration history and uniqueness of maize in the area in relation to the global germplasm pool for maize. On the local geographical scale this project will investigate the geneflow between landraces and improved cultivars, a hitherto little studied aspect of local seed systems of importance in relation to adaptive capacity in the face of climate change. The project will contribute to the discourse on strategies for development assistance to agriculture in the region, in particular with regard to the debate surrounding the initiatives from the Alliance for a Green Revolution for Africa.
