Gender Equality, Education and Poverty (GEEP)

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

The nature of this project requires that a number of perspectives by the various stakeholders are included. Thus, the project presented here has an overall qualitative design in that it examines more than one perspective on the object. It is also understood that the relationship between gender equality, equity, education and poverty is extremely complex and not linear and as a result requires a flexible research approach. In pursuing the research questions laid out in the previous section and in order to maintain a dual, if not multiple perspectives, a number of research methods are being applied and several kinds of data are being collected and analysed. The methodology employed in conducting the inquiry will be an exploratory case study (in both contexts); a strategy which provides inductively generated insights or findings pertinent to the topic addressed. Key features of the strategy to be employed are (a) conducting a comprehensive, open-ended search for information (documentary analysis of historical records, of policy documents, public debates, etc.), (b) Social mapping (involves building an in-depth understanding of the demography in order to identify target areas, target groups and potential stakeholders for the research activities ) and stakeholder analysis (involves building a shared vision of the project and to get commitments and support for research activities ), (c) conducting interviews with key stakeholders – teachers, parents, community members and pupils, and also with key decision-makers within the education sector, and (d) participant observations will be made in classrooms in both Sudan and South Africa. The project will also utilize existing ethnographic research to identify root causes, challenges, and obstacles that undermine or inhibit existing development efforts from within these countries, particularly as they relate to gender in addition to conducting our own ethnographic studies (by both researchers and research students). Its contribution rests in seeking out alternative strategies to minimize the gender divide and to empower the community at local levels in order that it takes ownership in educating all of its children.
