Guggenheim Visibility Study

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

Guggenheim Visibility Study is the title of a temporary laboratory set up to investigate and intervene in the planned development of the Vilnius Guggenheim Hermitage Museum (GHM). As proposed, the Vilnius GHM is to be comprised of the as-yet nonexistent ‘Litvak Cultural Centre’ two independent cinemas, and a youth education centre. Its crown jewels are to be the Anthology Film Archives and a massive collection of Fluxus art – both transplanted from New York City.

Joining the lab for a series of workshops are art and architecture students from Vilnius Art Academy, Vilnius Technical University and Trondheim Art Academy. Central to the research programme is the use of pedagogical and performative practices in artistic production to investigate the appropriative cannibalizing strategies of the proposed Vilnius GHM.

The workshop explores collaborative and collective modes of producing a reflection of concerns built on a critical and urgent need to deconstruct the grand and ambitious projects of ‘global culture’ in the service of private interests.

Metode

Guggenheim Visibility Study unfolds through the 3 overlapping layers of radical design practice each exercising research experiment through the workshop set-up to engage local community: “Social Housing Project” “Legacy of Fluxus” “Play Project”

The “Social Housing Project” suggests downscaling the grandiose Vilnius Guggenheim Hermitage Museum to a “human” level by transforming the spectacular architecture proposed for the museum into a series of shelters for homeless people located on the proposed site of the future GHM. The plans for spectacular architecture should be downscaled and adapted to local needs and conditions; use should be made of local materials and the capacities of the local economy should be respected.

The “Legacy of Fluxus” project will examine the possibility of revitalising Fluxus by exploring the collection acquired by Vilnius Municipality and will define the identity and local specificity of the Vilnius GHM. This inquiry addresses the possibilities that arise from the paradox that the international avant-garde movement together with art that used to be seen as anti-art now stand in the service of local politicians, and have thus become part of the national cultural industry.

The “Play Project” addresses the anxieties and desires associated with an imaginary museum. Borrowing the techniques of the ‘theatre of the oppressed’ participants share and exchange their political desires to script the narrative. The text draws on encounters, interviews, documents and testimonies that articulate the views of supporters and opponents of the global museum.
