Guggenheim Visibility Study is the title of a temporary laboratory set up to investigate and intervene in the planned development of the Vilnius Guggenheim Hermitage Museum (GHM). As proposed, the Vilnius GHM is to be comprised of the as-yet nonexistent ‘Litvak Cultural Centre’ two independent cinemas, and a youth education centre. Its crown jewels are to be the Anthology Film Archives and a massive collection of Fluxus art – both transplanted from New York City.
Joining the lab for a series of workshops are art and architecture students from Vilnius Art Academy, Vilnius Technical University and Trondheim Art Academy. Central to the research programme is the use of pedagogical and performative practices in artistic production to investigate the appropriative cannibalizing strategies of the proposed Vilnius GHM.
The workshop explores collaborative and collective modes of producing a reflection of concerns built on a critical and urgent need to deconstruct the grand and ambitious projects of ‘global culture’ in the service of private interests.
