Artists in the City

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

A case study:An industrial building in Williamsburg, New York, had been the living and working place for a long time for about 250 artists. In 2008 they were thrown out from the building because of fire security reasons. “Technically we were ‘evacuated’, not ‘evicted’ ” (artist). In 2008 the artists managed to get back into the building. This event is one similar to a lot of others in western cities, where artists move into urban areas in decline, and find cheap spaces for living and working, but have to move when gentrification and upgrading processes have reached a certain level, or because of renewal plans from real estate holders. This event is on the other hand a special one, because the artists fought for their place and could move into the building again. We want to tell this story, seen from the participants’ point of view. What did happen, and why? What actors played the crucial role in the decision of cleaning the place, and in deciding to let the artists in again? These are the most important questions to pose to enable a closer description and analysis of the case. The focus on art and artists in the city will be combined with and integrated into theories of gentrification (Ley 1995, Smith 1988, Lees et al 2008, Zukin 1991, 2010) and theory on production of landscapes in cities in transformation (Lefebvre 2000, Zukin 1995).

Metode

As research methods we use personal intervewing of artists and representatives of community organizations, document analysis, and visual documentation of the urban landscapes in question (photo, video). Our outlook, research and methods are both experimental and interdisciplinary, in terms of how we combine knowledge from urban studies and relevant perspectives on the relation between art, artists and society.
