Recognition, Reconciliation and Restoration: Applying a Postcolonial Understanding in Healing Processes

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

Finnmark University College holds a national responsibility for educatingchildcare pedagogues, social workers and nurses for work in the NorthernSámi regions. Recent experiences indicates that multiculturalism and culturalsensitivity are inadequate for an area in which the complex meeting of thethree tribes? (Norwegian, Sámi, Kven), appears central to the peopleseveryday existence in the past, present and future. Many commentatorsdefine this meeting in terms of the assimilation and colonization of Sámiareas. The focus on Sámi rights in the 1980s is regarded as a positivewatershed for Norwegian indigenous politics, even though some arguethat colonization is still the case, if in new forms. Many indigenous areasdeal with extensive postcolonial experiences. The project intends to findout whether postcolonial experiences and theories can help develop aviable multicultural understanding for healthcare and social work in theNorthern regions which stages a dialogue between multiculturalism andindigenous philosophy, and engages knowledge of the past to inform actionsin the present. Colonization consists of injustices and violations whoseconsequences go beyond language and culture. The project intends tocreate greater awareness of the historical colonization and its consequences.User participation and empowerment are vital goals for today?s healthcareand social work. The project aims to develop methodologies for dealingwith injustices and violations, intended both for healthcare and social workin general and the Sámi areas in particular. Our approach will build on theconcepts of recognition, reconciliation and restoration. Our research willregard these three empirical areas in a national macro-perspective but alsofrom the perspective of the methodologies of healthcare and social work.
