Counter-narratives among pupils with reading and/or writing difficulties

Sammendrag

The main issue in this article is to explore the phenomenon of master-narratives and counter-narratives based upon interviews of 24 pupils aged 16 to 20 about their school stories; school stories that all include some reading and/or writing difficulties. I define the phenomenon of counter-narratives as implicit or explicit lived and/or told stories which offer resistance to dominant cultural narratives. Counter-narratives give meaning towards something different that they parry or ward off. The concept points out a positional contrasting category. Counter-narratives exist in relation to dominant cultural narratives, but are not necessarily dichotomous entities. Counter-narratives seem always and at once to be in tension with dominant cultural narratives.
