Sammendrag
This project aims to analyse how teacher-child interactions foster caring,
democratic and disciplinary values in Swedish preschools. Specifically, the
project focuses on how gender appears in the communication of these values. In
previous research it is quite well documented that boys and girls act
differently, and that teachers encounter boys and girls in a different way,
but we know less about the relation between values and gender in preschool
upbringing. The study is inspired by Habermas´(1995) double perspective,
including concepts of life-world and system as well as communicative and
strategic action.. Moreover the analysis refers to gender as something that is
constituted through social interactions (Davies, 2003). Data consists of video
observations of teacher-child interactions in 12 toddler groups. Three kinds
of situations will be videotaped; circle time-, free play- and routine
situations of care. First, the data will be analysed in order to identify the
three fields of values. Second, each value will be analysed in relation to the
how aspect of communication and to gender. The third step aims to examine the
communicated values and revealed gender patterns from Habermas¿ double
perspective. The project is innovative when actualizing the relationship
between communicated values and gender concerning the youngest preschool
children.
