Barns dramtiske lek i barnehagen. Adult’s participation in children’s dramatic play in a Norwegian kindergarten

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

Although most teachers agree upon dramatic play as the most important activity for children, the time for children’s dramatic play in the kindergarten seems to be decreasing. Teachers’ understanding of children’s dramatic play and their ability to take part in this play culture, may be restricted by increasing numbers of children in kindergartens and the growing emphasize on literacy and numeracy skills.Dramatic play is seen as a collective aesthetical production, where children exchange dramatic ideas in order to create dramatic stories. Dramatic play requires a high state of concentration from the children taking part in the playgroup. Children have to negotiate and respond to several narrative and dramatic suggestions in order to maintain their collective dramatic play. Our  qualitative project  aims  at investigating how dramatic play in small groups with three or four children and one teacher, will increase the quality of dramatic play and the teacher’s understanding of dramatic play culture. The project is developed together with teachers in six Norwegian kindergartens.  The teachers write or record notes about their experiences: - How can teacher’s participation in play groups increase their understanding and knowledge of children’s dramatic play?- How do the teachers experience their own interaction with the children during the dramatic play?- How do the teachers experience the children’s participation in the dramatic play? - How can organized small play groups contribute to the overall quality of dramatic play?- We also want to investigate children´s perspecitves on play. Inspired by Mosaïc approach, we will talk with the children, ask them to take photographs and make drawings, etc.  Our the preliminary results show that just by being a participant in the project, the teachers pay more attention to the children’s play and that there seems to be overall more play among the children than before. The results also reveal that there are challenges with regard to the organization of the play groups due to the number of children and obligatory activities like literacy groups and preschool groups that occupy the day schedule. But the results also show that when the teachers succeed in organizing play groups with few children, the teachers seem to learn to know the children in a different way by getting close to each child.

Metode

Innsamling av narrativer/fokussamtale med ansatte i barnehage. Mosaïc approach med barns foto, tegninger, samtaler, samt observasjoner av barns lek.
