Sammendrag

Children´s museums are cultural institutions that provide hands-on exhibits and programs to stimulate informal learning experiences for children. The growing world of children´s museums is rich in offering experiences in culture, connections, cooperation, critical thinking and creativity. These institutions are ideally suited for interaction design and prototyping processes that include children. While the project has as it´s primary aim development of the master plan for the museum, with culturally rich, educational and playful content, the research focus is on how to engage and include the children in the design process.

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

There is a trend in all museums to engage visitors in experience-centered interactions, frequently involving new technologies: 3D technologies, interactive walls, magic carpets, augmented reality, smart phones or other hand-held devices, sensors, RFID chips, nanotechnology and others. Moving away from meaning making as it relates to learning in museums, these institutions are embracing interactivity as a catalyst for making meaning. Our goal is to explore possibilities for including children in the museum´s design process. Adjustment of existing methods for designing with children, as well as new methods development for the public exhibit design with children are primary research oriented goals for the project.

Metode

The main method draws on the set of existing participatory design methods with children such as Druin´s partnering with children in technology design processes. Further, cooperative inquiry, bonded design and MESS methods are to be tried and tested with children in this new settings. Adjustment of methods, as well as new methods development for the public exhibit design with children is one of the scientific goals of the project.
