Sammendrag
The project aims to investigate, document and explain the
considerable shifts of opinion inside the Norwegian officer corps during
the last twenty years of Norway’s political union with Sweden. As a
group, the officers had traditionally maintained very close ties to the
royal house, and the officers swore personal fealty to the King. When
nationalist politics in Norway led to clashes with Sweden and the royal
power in the 1890s, the Norwegian military was regarded as a potential
danger to the nationalist cause. In the event, however, the corps
placed its loyalties towards an independent Norwegian state above its
loyalties towards the royal house and the union. The project will attempt to
give new insights into an important event in Norwegian (and Swedish)
history and also to illuminate the internal dynamics of the officer corps
and of nationalist movements.
