Sammendrag

1. Descriptive studies of the endemic salmonid populations in the total course of Neretva River, (ca 215 km) including ecological conditions, hydrological regime, water quality, industrial and agricultural pollution, etc. The remaining of the project may go on without this initial survey, but it would be a very useful documentation and support for decisions that needs to be made in the main project. 2. Conservation of wild stock: a) Collection of broodstock fish from various locations ? repeated for 3 years b) Development of cryopreservation procedures of Adriatic trout milt c) DNA-typing of broodstock to access genetic variation and optimise mating scheme d) Production of fry and fingerlings for restocking of the river e) Further broodstock selection and management, assisted by simulation programs f) Repopulation/restocking of Neretva river with fry and fingerlings from three different sources: g) Newly hatched egg (to be DNA-typed later for parental assignment) h) Start-feed fry i) The two above, with use of cryopreserved milt j) Evaluation of each strategy 3. Intensive production a. Experimetns to improve feeding and management of fry to increase survival through the first feeding phase (some of the fry will also be utilised for wild stock management/repopulaton purposes). Will be evolved through refined experiments each of the three years of collection of broodstock b. From 2nd year, experiments to improve broodstock conditioning through special diets 4. Education and specialized training in Norway
