Student Teachers and Multicultural Awareness

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

We will explore first-year student teachers’ attitudes and awareness towards the multicultural society. We will examine whether students’ attitudes and awareness change during their first three years of teacher education. In Norwegian teacher education, students have the option of a one-semester stay abroad, and we will also investigate whether student stays abroad have an impact on their approach to cultural diversity. In Norway, as in other parts of the world, new teachers will face classrooms, schoolyards and kindergartens with pupils, children and parents of diverse cultural backgrounds. How conscious are student teachers about the challenges and opportunities that await them in this regard? How well prepared are they to work with children and parents of multiple cultural backgrounds? To what extent do student teachers in Norway show inclusive and tolerant attitudes towards cultural minority groups? Will such attitudes be strengthened during their years as student teachers? Still, there is a notable difference between demonstrating a general open-mindedness towards cultural diversity and showing a sophisticated understanding of the varieties and complexities of interaction in multicultural settings. A point of departure of this study is that in order to develop a sophisticated intercultural understanding, students need to be involved in multicultural settings, they need to reflect on their own and their companions experiences, and they need to relate their reflections to a or to a variety of theoretical frameworks. Thus, while students’ attitudes will be central to this study, we will also focus on students’ experiences and on their understanding of theoretical concepts.

Metode

We will conduct a quantitative study. Questionnaires will be administered to first and third year students. The study will be carried out at Hedmark University College, Norway.
