Tittel

Music and social (im)mobility

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

This project assumes that music education contitutes an aesthetic-functional field for the construction and negotiation of cultural meaning and identity. A central notion in this understanding is different aspects of the Foucauldian use of the terms technology of power and technology of self, which might be regarded as actions of introspection as well as procedures and performances one take on to cultivate oneself as a subject in certain manners. According to DeNora, technologies of self may also be seen as ways in which human beings form and regulate their agency by means of music. The objective of the project is to explore and describe how music and music education may function as technologies of self and power, in order to negotiate and renegotiate class belonging and social mobility in certain historical, social and cultural contexts, highlighting the significance of music education in the narrative and performance of social class and mobility. The project worked as a preparatory project to the RCN-funded project Musical gentrification and socio-cultural diversities
