Cultures of Medicine. Encounters, contentions and the shaping of new medical knowledge. (CultMed)

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

The project Cultures of Medicine (henceforth CultMed) addresses issues pertaining to varieties of medical knowledge and practices in cultural contact zones, how they are shaped, articulated, transmitted and transformed into new knowledge. The object of inquiry is cross-cultural and multi-sited. It is located in the intermediary space or third space of exchange between different knowledge traditions and cultural flows. CultMed posits that encounters between different medical systems and traditions bring about novel perceptions of humans, human dignity and health care. Thus, the project takes part in an important international research field, where the comparative approach is necessary and desirable, not least in today’s multicultural contexts. New knowledge in the cultural history of medicine and medical humanities is of prime importance in situations where medical encounters often are also cultural encounters. The medical traditions CultMed is interested in belong to different culture areas of origin. Thus, they are also conceived as markers of cultural identity and/or marked with a specific, localized identity (e.g. Western biomedicine, Indian Ayurveda, Chinese acupuncture, Sami medicine, circumpolar shamanism, the healing powers of water and medicinal plants in the Mediterranean region). By taking a sample of empirical contact situations – involving medical texts, practices and the materiality of medicine in translation as the point of departure for a set of case studies, the project will examine the structure of conjuncture between cultures of medicine as well as the genealogies of the involved traditions.
