Vitenskapelig sammendrag
The relationship between intake of iodine and the occurrence of thyroid disease is U-shaped, with an increased risk at both low and high intakes. There have been found a high prevalence of goiter among the Saharawi children and women in Algeria, and evidence to suggest that this is caused by excessive iodine intakes. This project aims at exploring the hormonal and developmental consequences of excessive iodine intake among lactating women and children in the Saharawi refugee camps.

Metode
In 2010 a cross-sectional baseline study was performed among 111 lactating women and their children aged 0-6 months, in the Saharawi refugee camps. A 3 year follow up was conducted in 2013 to monitor the development in thyroid disorders and iodine status. Three different indicators for assessing iodine status in children and women will be used; determination of urinary iodine concentration (UIC), thyroid size (Tvol) (palpation or ultrasound) and serum levels of TSH and thyroglobulin. To explore developmental status, the screening test Age & Stages Questionnaires 3rd edition (ASQ3), will be performed among the children.
