Tittel

Investments of Heaven and Hell: Music as Mythologically Based Narrative in Contemporary Film.

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

This project will explore the roles of music in a selection of modern films based upon either dramas by Shakespeare or ancient myths in order to further an understanding of the role played by music in the creation of meaning within these modern works. It also includes films where the myths are realized in the ways music is used, not in the outer story of the films. The project will have two main lines of investigation: It seeks to develop theories and methods for analysing the artistic language marked by a high degree of intermediality typical of modern film and video, with particular regard to the role of music. It also seeks to trace the webs of interactions between past and present inherent in such transmedialised works of art, thus trying to explore meanings arising from appropriations of the past into contemporary creative processes. The project is rooted in a post-Foucauldian historiographic understanding as coined by Hayden White and others. Here historical phenomena are, on the one hand, understood to be arising from a web of their historical and contemporary contexts; and, on the other hand, the interpretations we make of them are – in the last instance - acknowledged as constructions made by the interpreters in their processes of constructing their own significative world views.

Metode

It combines recent theoretical and methodological developments within the following fields: • “new musicology”/musical hermeneutics • studies of intermediality • film studies • Bakhtin’s theories of dialogicity and polyphony will be applied as tools to develop a more diversified understanding of the many-faceted and complex webs of interplay between music and the other media
