Tittel

Changing Appearances: Intermedial Interplays in Garborg’s and Grieg’s Haugtussa Cycles and Influences from the Breakthrough of Modernism on these works.

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

This project explores the cultural functions brought about through the intermedial strategies employed by both Arne Garborg and Edvard Grieg in their Haugtussa cycles. Earlier interpretations of these two works are challenged and new ones offered.

Further the possible impacts on Garborg from Nietzsche and Schopenhauer and from the multifaceted aspects of religious orientation, typical of the onset of modernism, are investigated.

Metode

Within a strong post-modern hermenutical framework particulary two intermedial theories are employed; theories of musicalization as proposed by Werner Wolf, and theories of discursive musical meaning as promoted by Lawrence Kramer. The methods then concentrate on using the understanding offered thorugh these theories in processes of description, analysis, and interpretation.
