Tittel

Injuries related to drugs/alcohol at an A and E department

Sammendrag

Drugs and/or alcohol are disproportionately involved in injuries arising from accidents, suicide attempts and violence. This type of injury has not attracted much scholarly attention in Norway; the last study is thirty years old already. Since then, there has been a rapid rise in the use of drugs and alcohol. This study looks at frequency and range of drug and alcohol related injuries at an A&E department. All patients aged 18-70 admitted to an A&E department at a hospital in Oslo over a twelve-month period will be invited to participate in this study. In addition to diagnosis of disorder/injury and treatment provided, participants' blood will be screened for alcohol and/or other substances, and each participant will be interviewed. The extent of harm caused by drugs/alcohol will be categorised by type of injury, patient characteristics, day of week and time of admittance, and compared with information gathered from interviewees, blood analyses and clinical diagnostic assessments.
