3)Hva karakteriserer unge snusbrukere?

Tittel

The use of snus among the young – does it immunize them against smoking or escalate the risk of starting to smoke?

Sammendrag

The project will investigate the connections between snus consumption and taking up smoking at a later date. The main research questions are: 1) Does the use of snus affect underlying cognitions of possible importance for starting to smoke? By following young snus users over time, we seek to determine whether the use of snus affects expectations of smoking or prototypical conceptions of smokers. If young snus consumers who would normally be expected to start smoking develop cognitions of a more positive nature towards smoking, then snus could act as a gateway to smoking at a later date. If, on the other hand, young snus users who would normally be expected to start smoking develop cognitions of a more negative nature, then consuming snus could act as a barrier and prevent a smoking habit forming in the future. 2) What sort of expectations do snus users develop to the use of snus, and what is the significance of expectations for intentions to carry on using snus? 3) What characterises young snus consumers? Could this group of tobacco users be described as having the same characteristics as those who normally begin to smoke, or do they represent a new group of tobacco users? The data were collected through a longitudinal survey conducted by telephone at three distinct points in time. The respondent group numbered c. 1,000 smokers, 1,000 snus users, and 1,000 non-smokers. The respondents were asked about snus and cigarette use respectively, variables usually seen as predisposing to smoking, expectations of the use of cigarettes and a cross-sectional study of students in Bergen.
