CRACKS AND IN-BETWEENS: INVESTIGATING RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL GAPS BETWEEN THE SECULAR AND THE SACRED

How do migrants create meaning and bearing in globalized and pluralized societies like Norway? How are we to study the human effort in creating meaning in unstable situations, and how can religious institutions and networks relate constructively to this human effort, especially concerning individuals experiencing various forms of crisis?

With a goal of looking at particular religious and spiritual practices and views of life, the overall consideration in this project is to analyze the social outcome of the human struggle to create and maintain meaning and bearing in life. These discourses and practices, which may transgress the sacral - secular divide, launch in the present project discussions as to how society in general and religious institutions in particular, can meet and respond to this struggle. How do migrants bridge the gap between a spiritual/religious and a material/secular view of the world, for instance when religious leaders use spiritual explanations for what public health discourse calls biomedical processes, or when newly arrived immigrants who see their arrival on new territory as a journey to an unknown diaspora, and who frame difficulties with the local bureaucracy in terms of spiritual warfare?

In this project we approach these questions by analyzing three different socio-religious fields, that of 1) "Believing and Belonging" – Christian migrant's encounter with Norwegian society in general, and Norwegian Christian traditions and the Norwegian welfare system in particular, and 2) "Transnational simultaneity" – ways to relate to differences in the religious practices of Muslim and Christian migrants in homeland and on the new territory. 3) "Religion's role in social cohesion in a plural society". We ask how people experiencing challenges or crisis participate in or make use of different religious and social arenas such as churches, mosques, and hospitals, and how migrants use their religious networks to understand and interpret the Norwegian welfare state (including the religious establishment, i.e. the Church of Norway) and address issues related to integration, family reunion and the labor market. The research will mainly be conducted in Norway, but linked to comparative research from the UK and the Netherlands.
