Tittel

Sport for all? Exploring the public health potential of the Birkebeiner races, Norway’s ultimate mass-participation sporting events

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

Rationale

Mass participation sporting events, such as the Birkebeiner races (BR), have not only become popular at a global level in recent years, they have been increasingly viewed as encouraging enhanced and regular physical activity in the population. However, the public health potential of mass participation sporting events, and especially the BR, remains an under-researched phenomenon. Moreover, there are concerns about the extent to which BR attract those from social groups of relevance to public health and physical activity promotion.

Objectives

The overall objective of this project is to interrogate existing data in order to generate fundamental knowledge that will inform the planned main project and establish a collaborative partnership with Birken AS. More specifically, sub-objectives of the project are:

  1. To provide a detailed understanding of the data collection processes used by Birken AS before, during and after different events in order to evaluate the robustness of their data collection processes and their potential value for the main project.
  2. Obtain in-depth knowledge about the socio-demographic and motivational factors influencing participation in the major BR as well as the physical demands placed on all participants. This will allow us to test out assumptions about the public health potential of BR, which will inform the research questions in the main project.
  3. To feed back knowledge from objectives 1 and 2 to Birken AS and assist them in developing preliminary evidence-based promotional and support materials for actual and potential participants. This will foster a collaborative partnership with Birken AS that will be important for continuing the dialogue in relation to the development of the main project.

Research questions

  1. What are the data-collection strategies that Birken AS has been using over the past 15 years?
  2. What are the patterns of participation in the BR over the past 15 years, with respect to motivational and sociodemographic factors?
  3. What are the physical demands of participating in the BR with respect to pacing strategy in different sub-groups of participants?

Metode

Birken AS has been routinely collecting a large amount of quantitative and qualitative data on race participants over many years. Therefore, in this qualification project, we will interrogate existing databases in order to obtain a comprehensive overview of the phenomenon and generate knowledge that will help us define specific research questions and appropriate methodological approaches for a future large-scale and prospective project.
