Give a short summary of the project (250 words max)
Innovative Maker Trends in Art & Design Practices: Art in Society, Heritage Narratives and Hybrid
Laboratories (Maker Trends) is an 24 months collaborative effort that seeks to bring together art and
design, and education and heritage communities to develop practices that lead to development of new
hybrid storytelling artifacts. These artifacts will link memories from the virtual domain with the material
domain of everyday life.
The work is based on already existing collaboration between the Aalto University Media Lab Helsinki
(FINLAND), RIXC New Media Center and MPLAB at University of Liepaja (LATVIA) and Art in Society
Research Group (NORWAY). The work involves development of a curriculum to use digital and social
crafts, growths and manufacturing techniques with heritage and storytelling. The activities include four
workshops (one for each partner) that are targeted to the creative and memory sectors. In addition there
will be an exhibition-seminar event to be held in Helsinki for display of the final results. Our method for
generating the curriculum will be a collaborative laboratory (collaboratory) approach.
