WorkLab 4: Oslofjord Ecologies was initiated and organized by Kristin Bergaust, Art in Society Research Group at HiOA.

The Oslofjord encompasses ecological connections and challenges that are specific and tangible, as well as cultural practices and interactions with the environment and its populations. The Oslofjord is nature, economy, infrastructure, biology, materiality, culture and history as well as future plans and challenges.

How can new concepts of knowledge, artistic methods and interdisciplinary engagement contribute to formulate sustainable relationships to the environment?

The workshop was organized in three main clusters or spinners of themes:

(art)education

artistic research

the everyday: agency and action

The participants were approximately 40 artists, researchers and research fellows. During the last three days, the program was open to the public.

The workshop will be followed by:

An exhibition, the first in a series of three exhibitions that will alternate between Oslo, Riga and Helsinki. The Oslo version will build upon works and productions connected to the former Oslofjord Ecologies workshop and activities, but will also contain at least two works invited from other partners. The exhibition will contain from five to eight productions for spatial display (sculptures, installations, objects, images). The proposed gallery (RAM galleri, Oslo) also has possibilities for outdoor displays. A screening program will be curated and produced as part of the exhibition. An interdisciplinary workshop will be held in connection with the exhibition to prepare for the publication.

A publication will be a compilation of ten to fifteen academic/scientific articles from research fields such as art- and performance theory, interdisciplinary artistic research and art and sicence collaborations peer-reviewed after international double blind standards. Particpants from Oslofjord Ecologies workshops and the larger network of Renewable Futures will be invited to submit their work. The journal Acoustic Space will publish and distribute  a special, themed issue ”Oslofjord Ecologies” in a printed version. After two years, the material will be published as Open Access.
