Simulation in nursing education

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

Title

Use of simulation based learning in undergraduate nursing education

Author: Assistant professor Line Marie Lindenskov, VID Specialized University, Oslo/Norway.

Background: Patients in Norway are entitled to secure and safe care performed by competent healthcare professionals. Changes in patient’s condition might occur unnoticed. The following consecutive emergency medical intervention is therefore crucial. A deterioration in a patient’s condition requires trained nursing staff performing rapid and accurate assessments. Here medical simulation has proven to elevate performance skills. Nurse education and training at VID Specialized University comprise simulation based learning to prepare, challenge and educate students.

Research questions: How can we develop a simulation based learning module that both enhances cooperation between co-workers on the ward, as well as obtain the skills necessary to cope in life threatening situations?

Results: The information gathered during the years 2011-2012 enabled us to develop a medical simulation model, which we introduced in 2013. The medical simulation model is now anchored in the curriculum for the second and last year vocational training. Our results confirm that medical simulation is a suitable approach to learn and practice clinical nursing skills in a controlled and safe environment – for both students and trainers. This entails that the supervising staff need to be a trained facilitator.

Conclusion: By recreating realistic patient situations and relive negative experiences, we could revise procedures and develop a training program that assists nurses to cope with challenges when they arise.

Metode

Method: Data in this study is based on notes from observing 400 students and 151 healthcare workers within action research and 400 student’s course evaluation notes. Data was collected during the years 2011- 2016 at VID Specialized University in Campus Oslo. All nursing students included in the study were in the end of their vocational training.
