Network for improving research based higher education in basic and applied microbiology

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

The overall project goals are to modernize and improve research-based higher education in microbiology, including environmental microbiology and microbial biotechnology in key nationallevel educational and research institutions in Armenia, Georgia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, and to establish a sustainable platform for long-term international collaboration between these countries
and with Norway. The means to reach these goals are; student exchange, summer schools with practical training and field work in Eurasia, curriculum and new course development, infrastructure support, study visits, student internships, guest lecturing, shared supervision etc. Microorganisms have huge impact on our life; in health, agriculture, ecology and in technology, and increased focus and knowledge of the nature, roles and potential of these organisms is therefore of great importance. Emphasis will be made on development of practical skills and increased knowledge through thesis
projects and support to microbiology study programs and training of students and staff. Student thesis topics will include microbiology of extreme environments like geothermal sites, salterns and mines, polluted soils, thermostable industrial enzymes, and how environmental pollutants in the ecological disaster area connected to the Aral Sea may affect macro-organisms by entering the food chain through microorganisms. Frequent exchange activities and meetings involving students and teachers from all participating countries will create an effective working platform for development of the common goals. It is anticipated that the project also will raise the level of awareness of environmental protection issues in central Asian countries and elsewhere, and connect the strands of Eurasian and European higher education and science.
