An Aesthetic of Interruption

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

Both video and the still image are engaged in temporality. Lately, artistic discourses have been more and more focused on this issue. Especially slowness has gained prominence in discussion of art – doubtlessly in reaction to the fast-paced media culture today. The Association for the Study of Arts in the Present devoted its annual conference to this topic in 2018. The symposium seeked to engage with various concepts of slowness, especially as it concerns spatial and temporal orders and/or aesthetic and political discourses and practices, by interrelating theory and practice. More specifically, the organizers were particularly interested in our (Bal + Christensen) extensive experience in combining theory and practice in our work. Bal was a keynote speaker at the symposia and I had the privilege of showing my video work Woman Interrupted as part of Bal’s talk on our concept of An Aesthetics of Interruption. Editor-in Chief Jonathan P. Eburne commissioned a text on our dialogue, and after being peer reviewed it was accepted and printed in ASAP/Journal 4.1 (January 2019):

Mieke Bal with Jeannette Christensen, An Aesthetics of Interruption: Stagnation and Acceleration. ASAP/Journal 4.1 (January 2019) The Association for the Study of Arts of the Present, Published by John Hopkins University Press. Text in English, ill.

Hennes mange publikasjoner inkluderer A Mieke Bal Reader (2006), Travelling Concepts in the Humanities (2002) og Narratology (4. utgave 2017). Hun er bredt publisert og utstilt.
