Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag

A project involving HEI institutions and four primary schools developing practises on Curricula Based Outdoor Learning

Vitenskapelig sammendrag

The GOaL project is partnership of four European institutes for higher education and four schools in four different countries: Norway, United Kingdom, Belgium and Italy.
The project objectives are to:

  • develop a common understanding of pedagogy for, and practice of curricular based outdoor learning
  • test and develop methodologies for outdoor learning that develop pupils' basic skills and transversal skills/competences
  • support teachers in developping a creative inclusive approach to outdoor learning through international collaboration and increase teacher satisfaction
  • enhance learners' understanding and appreciation for outdoor environments from a sustainable perspective
  • develop internationally-applicable guidelines for curricular outdoor learning
  • provide recommendations for policy makers and educational administrators
  • disseminate project learning to practioners and policy makers in participating countries and beyond

Metode

Each HEI will support its partner school in the development of its outdoor practice and the collection of data. Partner schools will test best practices in curricular outdoor learning based on their existing experience.  After developing their outdoor learning practices, schools will exchange best practices in order to test the exchangability of outdoor learning activities and also to improve activities.

The main points of what we will do are:

  1. encourage inclusive, innovative and creative approaches to OL that are good for teachers’ professional development / retention and children’s development
  2. Develop a common understanding of and pedagogy for OL across the project
  3. Improve children’s basic (e.g. literacy, numeracy, science, digital) and transversal (e.g. positive attitude, communication, time management, problem-solving, teamwork, learning from criticism) skills through practical activities in authentic settings
  4. Influence teachers’ and pupils’ attitudes towards the importance of the environment through regular contact with the outdoor world
  5. Demonstrate (any) increase in children’s motivation and wellbeing
  6. Encourage regular communication between schools and parents/carers
  7. Draw on Waite et al’s six conceptual elements of OL to develop a theoretical framework for the project: purpose, aims, content, pedagogy, outcome and barriers
  8. Report on the number of teachers and pupils involved in the project, and the number of links to non-partner schools connected with the project
