Sammendrag
This book chapter addresses how adolescents’ substance use (use of alcohol, cigarettes and illegal drugs) varies according to characteristics of their parents (i.e., parents’ substance use and provision of alcohol) and the parent-child-relationship. We analysed self-reported data from a nation-wide school survey among 13-19 year old Norwegians (n = 11.132, response rate: 92 %). In line with findings from earlier studies, the analyses showed that adolescents who described the relationship to their parents as problematic used more substances than other adolescents. Moreover, the consumption of alcohol was highest among those who answered that they often get alcohol from their parents. Finally, there was an association between the adolescents’ and their parents’ drinking and smoking habits. The result presentation is followed by a discussion of how such relationships can be explained.
