The Convergence of "Hard" and "Soft" in Music Technology

Sammendrag

Music has had a long-lasting relationship with technology, extending from sophisticated mechanical instruments in earlier centuries to present day digital means of music production and distribution. With one foot in technology and another foot in musical aesthetics, the convergence of "hard" and "soft" in music technology is more than ever the case in present music technology research and development. Given the seemingly limitless possibilities of digital music technology to generate any sound, previously heard or unheard, one major challenge now is to develop better means for accessing subjective and affective features of music, in short, to make more musically meaningful man-machine interaction schemes.
