The date of II Reg 17,24-41

II Reg 17,24–41 contains two units, both coming from the Persian period. The first, vv. 24–34a, is characterized by Late Biblical Hebrew in the use of the periphrastic structure of verbs and the use of participles. The names of cities of origin for the new settlers are taken from II Kings 18,34; 19,13; Ezra 4,9, and the names of their gods are identifiable in one case only, Nergal of Kuthah: the others are spurious. The second unit, vv. 34b–40, was created on the basis of vv. 7–23 and II Kings 18; 19, and constitutes another critical evaluation of the northern populationof the Persian period. Both units are possibly anti-Samaritan polemics.
