Coping with downwards social mobility: Class and identity in the descending middle class in Northern Argentina

Sammendrag

Since the 90s, and especially after the 2001 economic breakdown, people who perceived themselves as "middle class" find themselves in a very different economic position than they were used to. This affects their understanding of themselves in the class system, influences their daily lives, and shapes their expectations for the future. In this paper I will explore how the descending middle class relate to the class system - how do they perceive themselves in relation to the class system? How does their identifying with a certain class affect and shape their choices? I find that questions concerning class identity are important, as it to some degree shapes the choices that people perceive as possible for themselves, both regarding political participation and in their struggle for daily survival.
