Enzyme discovery and development for biomass conversion in the marine bio-based industry

Sammendrag

Identifying better enzymes for the emerging marine biotechnology industry will be a key to further development and value creation in this sector. Norway has the potential to be leading in sustainable value-creation based on marine resources. The few commercial enzymes (proteases) used for fish hydrolysis (the process of degrading raw material to smaller molecules) today give an insufficient yield and a bitter taste of the marine hydrolysates, which are barriers for the commercial realization of new products. Uni Research is involved in discovering new proteases for this market. The main strategies applied for enzyme discovey are outlined here. Both strategies have enabled us to identify and characterize several new enzymes with an industrial potential.
