Polish migrant mothers in Norway on theri children's relationships with grandparents in Poland

Sammendrag

The purpose of this paper is to provide insight into the processes of (re-)establishing transnational relationships among grandparents and grandchildren in the context of Polish migration to Norway. The paper begins with a brief review of the literature on relationships among grandparents and grandchildren and their importance for both sides; then the methodology of the research is described. The research results are presented as a narrative, which the author considers to be the most relevant way to describe the complexity and the dynamics over time of (re-)establishing relationships in a transnational context. The results reconstruct how the patterns of mothers’ meanings evolve from transferring the responsibility for the grandparent-grandchild relationship to the grandparents to taking this responsibility upon themselves. This includes arranging both Skype calls and visits to Poland in such a way that they meet the needs of the grandparents (primarily so that visits do not disrupt their daily routines), the needs of the children (the need to play and have fun in order to be met and known), and their own needs. Holidays are experienced most positively when the grandparents can visit and see the children “naturally, as if we were living in Poland,” which excludes staying under one roof. Skype calls are most fruitful in strengthening the grandchild-grandparent relationship when they are not arranged for the children and grandparents, but when the children spontaneously and naturally participate in talks arranged for and by the adults. Spontaneity and naturalness seem to be the relationship qualities that disappear first after migration, and these are the ones that demand the most work to be re-defined and re-established.
