Imagining smart environments - Reflections on the role of metaphors in infrastructure development

Sammendrag

Our cities, institutions, homes, and landscapes are increasingly being equipped with devices that glean information, process this information, and make it available as a basis for decision making. Some of these devices can be programmed to take decisions for us. Such "smart technologies" are shaping our societies in novel ways. They also facilitate new ways of engaging with the natural environment. This calls for attention to how such technology is brought into being. Human beings use metaphors, allegories, and other evocative representations to make sense of complex issues. We use them to make sense of problems to be solved, as well as to imagine technologies that can solve these problems. Metaphors work by using one phenomenon or thing to highlight some aspects of another phenomenon or thing while leaving other aspects out. In this sense, metaphors do not merely describe reality but influence what becomes real to us (Lakoff and Johnson, 1980). I will reflect on the role of metaphors in the development of "smart technology," with a particular focus on "smart infrastructures" in the public sector. One of the issues I will address is the implications of using the human brain as a metaphor for the development of computer programs and using the evolution of species as an allegory for technology development. Further, I will discuss how engaging critically and creatively with metaphors can help us explore different problems and opportunities, imagine different technologies, and develop different infrastructured environments.
