Sammendrag

THE FIRST APPROVAL PROCESS OF AN ANESTHESIA PROGRAM IN NORWAY Marit Vassbotten Olsen (RNA, MNSc), Sigrunn Drageset (RNA, PHd), Sissel Brenna Johansen (RN,MNSc) Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. Mail to: marit.vassbotten.olsen@hvl.no INTRODUCTION In 2010 the International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists (IFNA) started their Approval Process for Anesthesia Program (APAP). The system is voluntary, and started as a possibility of raising people’s health and welfare by making standards of education of nurse anesthetists and anesthesia personnel. Better competencies gives better patient safety. The anesthesia programs are evaluated by IFNA and their Educational Standards. At this starting point, it is a priority task for IFNA to approve education programs that makes it possible to have anesthesia education. It’s important for IFNA to encourage nursing education as a part of this competence, but because of the great differences in education worldwide it’s important for health personnel, with both nursing competences and others to have a systematic training in anesthesia. This will raise their competence in delivering anesthesia both for today and in the future. APAP The approval program consist of three levels and the candidates have to decide what level to apply for. Level 1 – Registration – Registration have met eligibility and application requirements for IFNA Registration. Level 2 - Recognition – Recognition have met eligibility and application requirements for IFNA Recognition. Level 3 – Accreditation - anesthesia education programs holding Level 3 IFNA Accreditation have met eligibility requirements and completed a written self - study. An on-site visit by IFNA experts has been completed confirming substantial compliance with the IFNA Educational Standards and full compliance with the curriculum standards. Deemed Accreditation Status – The second option is the deemed accreditation. Accredited programs approved through this pathway must verify that the program has met its official governmental or non-governmental standards for nurse anesthesia education. An approval of all levels has to be renewed every 5th year, by sending in new curriculums. To spread the news of the system and make a higher interest for the APAP program IFNA decided to give education programs the possibilities to apply for an APAP grant in the period of 2014 – 2015. THE PROCESS OF APPROVAL - A WORK TO BE DONE Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL), Campus Bergen, Norway - Master program of Nurse Anesthesia applied for this grant, to start the process of Approval their NA program at Level 3. A couple of weeks after the «One site visit» we received a report from the “On site visit “ team, with the possibility to give feed back on all issues. This report were delivered to the IFNA Education Committee for evaluation, and advices of the approval result given to the IFNA Executive Committee. The result was proclaimed at the IFNA Committee meeting in Budapest in May 2017:MASTER IN CLINICAL NURSING – SPECIALIZATION NURSE ANAESTHESIA – HVL Campus Bergen was awarded the status of IFNA Accreditation in May 2017 having completed all requirements of the Anesthesia Program Approval Process established by the International Federation of Nurse Anesthetists (Date of next review: May 2022).
