Sammendrag
For the presentation at Obrera, Eliassen will show excerpts from earlier/ ongoing works, as well as share of a project in progress that she has been working on since first coming to Mexico in 2015. Drawing from an interest in how various strategies employed with moving images can work to counter manipulative aspects of cinematic production, Eliassen started out an inquiry on how filmmakers, media-activists and other practitioners of film and video were responding to the Mexican government’s handling of the 43 disappeared students from Ayotzinapa in 2014. The project was originally looking at whether the massive social mobilization in the aftermath of the incident was leading to new and alternative forms of cinema; subverting official narratives constructed to shape public opinion. The project received a grant for journalistic investigations from the Institute of Free Speech Norway, and the research was intended to result in an article. As the research expanded, the work is now slowly developing into an essayistic documentary film project, as well as a video archive from which several works will be screened in Oslo throughout 2018/ 2019.
