Sammendrag

Editors summary: In Chapter 4, Contested chronic conditions fused with medical uncertainty: gendered perspectives, Olaug S. Lian discusses how long-term fatigue has gone from high status and associated predominantly with men in the nineteenth century via a diagnosis of neurasthenia to low status and associated with women in the twentieth century via a diagnosis of myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) or chronic fatigue. In so doing, explanations have transformed from a focus on structural difficulties, with roots in unprecedented societal change, to an individualised explanation based on poor coping skills and other incompetencies. Fatigue is, moreover, counterposed to masculine qualities of energy, strength and endurance. Through the analysis of historical and contemporary accounts of chronic fatigue, Lian is able to demonstrate its deep gendered roots. Chronic fatigue is here particularly useful in illuminating cultural discourses, because it is a contested condition, characterised by medical uncertainty, which leaves more space for moral and normative accounts to enter the discourse. These assumptions may be present, but largely invisible, in other clinical contexts.
