SPORT OUTCOMES RAPID EVIDENCE REVIEW UPDATE: Physical Wellbeing and Mental Health

Sammendrag

The purpose of this review was to assess the evidence base regarding the role of physical activity, exercise and/or sport in determining physical wellbeing and mental health outcomes. The specific objectives of the review were to: • Examine the evidence regarding how physical activity, exercise and/or sport influence health outcomes across the age and health spectrum. • Identify the characteristics of successful interventions. • Identify gaps in the current evidence-base. To achieve this, a rapid evidence review was conducted using database searches and submissions from relevant stakeholders. Specifically, ten databases were searched which identified 115 and 106 relevant records for physical wellbeing and mental health, respectively. By primarily focusing on systematic reviews, it was possible to access and review a large body of evidence in a timely manner. Physical Wellbeing The literature suggests that engaging in physical activity and/or exercise is associated with a healthy cardiometabolic profile and protective effects across the life span. Additionally, regular physical activity and exercise facilitates the maintenance of a healthy aging process and reduces the risk of developing numerous non-communicable diseases. Furthermore, a variety of clinical conditions were shown to benefit from habitual physical activity and/or exercise, such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Parkinson’s disease), stroke, musculoskeletal diseases (e.g. Osteoarthritis), pulmonary diseases (e.g. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) and metabolic diseases (e.g. type 2 diabetes). Despite this evidence for the positive associations between physical activity and physical wellbeing, the methodological robustness of some studies warrants caution. Further work is required to determine the influence of sports participation.Mental Health Physical activity, predominately in the form of exercise, can improve symptoms of anxiety and depression in a variety of populations and may alleviate symptoms related to post traumatic stress disorder. Whilst these 5 effects of exercise are of a moderate magnitude and less than may be elicited through conventional anti-depressant treatments, it is nonetheless encouraging that such beneficial changes may be engendered through physical activity and without pharmacological intervention. However, further methodologically rigorous work is required to allow definitive, and more specific, conclusions to be drawn, especially with regards to the effects in those with multiple concomitant conditions.
