An examination of the current status and popularity of HR analytics

Sammendrag

This article discusses the current status and popularity of HR Analytics (HRA) as a management concept in the field of human resource management (HRM). The concept of HRA involves gathering and analyzing HR data in order to improve decision making. The HRA concept has in recent years risen greatly in popularity among practitioners and consultants and is the topic of conferences, books, magazine articles and blog posts. To this date, however, HR analytics has only to a limited extent been scrutinized from a more critical perspective. The aim of this paper is therefore to examine the status and popularity of HR Analytics over the last few years through the lens of management fashion, a theoretical perspective which is often used to understand the macro-level evolutionary trajectories of management concepts. The evidence reviewed in this paper provides an integrated view of the supply and demand sides in the market for HRA. The analysis indicates that the supply-side of HRA has been actively promoting and positioning the concept as a necessary solution to contemporary HR challenges. While there has also been some interest in and demand for the concept among organizations and managers, the evidence so far suggests that the use and take-up of HRA in organizational practice is limited. Generally, the impact of HRA appears to be greatest at the discursive level.
