Teacher Quality: Emotional Support and Classroom Climate

Sammendrag

We leverage the as-good-as random assignment of children to classrooms in Norwegian primary schools to estimate the effect of teacher’s general capacity to form positive relationships on children’s performance in math and reading, as well as reader self-concept and interest in reading. While we find meaningful effects on math and reading interest, we lack the precision to infer effects on reading and self-concept in reading. Our findings have important implications for the value-added literature as we highlight part of what may explain the salient variation in teacher effectiveness and demonstrate the usefulness of so-far under-exploited measures of teacher quality.
